Basically the vertical line test is used to determine whether or not something is a function. You take a vertical line and run it through a function. The line can only touch the function at one point for it to be called a function. An example would be.

As you can see here, vertical lines are touching the quadratic I have drawn only at one point. So this function is a function

now the vertical line touches more than once, so this is not a function.
