ok so i did .80a (a is cans of tomatoes) and .40b (b is cans of corn) 
then a+b=24 because there are 24 total.

then i did 
.8a +.4b=12.8

since i don't like decimals i multiplied the whole thing by 10

$$8a+4b=128$$

then i divided by 4 to get the b isolated and i got 
$$2a+b=32$$

and then since a+b=24 i subtracted it from the 2a+b=32

this looks like:
$$2a+b-a-b=32-24$$

so olivia can you do 
2a+b=32
-a -b= -24

ok so you are going to subtract from both sides.

what is 2a-a? 
what is +b-b? 
what is 32-24?
