Old question, but to help out future users: part A 1: U is called the universal set, and it includes everything in the box (including circles A and B). for Problem I, U = {1,2,3...9} so you know that the numbers 1-9 should be present somewhere inside the box set A = {2,4,5,6,7} set B = {2,3,4,5,6} start by finding the numbers that are common to both A and B. for example, 4 is present in both sets A and B, so it would go where the intersection of A and B are but, suppose you have a number like 7 that is only present in set A. you would put it inside circle A but do not put it inside circle B (so avoid the intersection) repeat with the rest of the numbers in the list then, anything that's still inside U goes inside the box, but outside the circles repeat with problems A2-A3

part B: you need to know your set notation for this for example, for B1: A' (with the ' meaning prime) means the complement of A, or in other words, everything that's *not* in set A. B simply refers to everything *inside* circle B the upside-down U sign means the intersection. here, it would mean everything that is common to both A' and B in other words, take A', B, and only shade in the area that is common to both.
