More than 900 million people worldwide practice Hinduism. The majority of people in India & Nepal practice Hinduism. Hinduism evolved or grew, from the ideas of an earlier religion called Brahmanism. Brahmanism was the religion of Aryans, who lived in the Indus Valley. The Aryans worshipped nature with rituals & praise. Their beliefs & practices were recorded in ancient texts. During the Vedic Period, culture reflected religious beliefs. People in the Vedic Period: practiced rituals, such as chanting & sacrifices. wrote a collection of religious texts, including the Vedas & the Upanishads. created sacred hymns & long poems, including the Bhagavad Gita. Hinduism spread throughout India & beyond. By the first century CE, Hinduism had spread throughout the kingdoms in Southeast Asia. These kingdoms adopted & adapted certain Hindu texts, rituals, & architecture. The ancient Khmer empire built enormous temples. The Vedas r the sacred texts of Hinduism. The Vedas: date back between 1200 BCE & 200 BCE. define truth for Hindus. r four separate texts. One important belief explained in the Vedas is dharma. Dharma is the Hindu belief in duty. Hindus believe that dharma is the power that holds up the universe. Dharma allows people to act purely. Hindus believe that correct action & behavior is a service 2 humankind & the gods. Another important Hindu belief is ahimsa. Ahimsa is the belief that a person should avoid harming any living thing. It means avoiding physical, mental, & emotional harm. Many Hindus practice vegetarianism because of ahimsa. Other important Hindu beliefs r karma, reincarnation, & moksha. Karma: Means "action". It is the belief that every action has an equal reaction. Reincarnation: Is the belief that one's soul will be reborn in human or nonhuman form. Follows a continuous cycle. Moksha: Is the process of being saved from the cycle of living on Earth. Frees 1 from the cycle of reincarnation. Hindus believe in many gods & 1 supreme god. Brahma upholds & supports everything. Other deities or gods r responsible for ruling certain things. The deities can take human form. The first of the 3 major gods r Brahma: Hindus believe that Brahma is the creator of the whole universe. The second of the 3 major gods is Vishnu: Hindus believe that Vishnu is the protector of the universe. The third of the 3 major gods r Shiva: Hindus believe that Shiva is the destroyer who removes all evil from the world. Lakshmi is the goddess of money & good luck. Ganesh is the god of wisdom. Hindus believe that the gods come to temples & make themselves visible to people. Hinduism has many rituals. Hindu rituals: celebrate specific stages of life. celebrate specific events. Hindu festivals celebrate different things throughout the year. Diwali-festival of lights. Holi-festival of colors. Maha Shivaratri-festival of Shiva. Janmashtami-celebration of Krishna. Since ancient times, Hindus have practiced yoga. Yoga: involves breath control, meditation, & different body postures. comes from an ancient word that means "unite." is used to control the mind & the senses. is considered a way to achieve moksha.
