Nightmares are something that almost all of us have had at one time. Nightmares are bad dreams that wake us up from sleep. These dreams can cause anxiety and fear. When we sleep, our reasoning is for the time being is turned off. Therefore, in dreams, anything can happen. Dreams occur about 90 percent of the time during the deepest part of the sleep. This part is called REM (rapid eye movement). That means nightmares can occur very often. These dreams can happen throughout our lives. Children under the age of five do not experience many bad dreams. However, about 25 percent of children, ages 5 to 12, have nightmares.
