Between the second and third days, the temperature decreased by 3 degrees. On the third day, the low temperature was –6º. What was the low temperature on the first day?

let's let x = the low temp. on the first day

"betwen the first and second days, the temp. increased by 6 degrees" ---> so far, x + 6 on the second day
"between the second and third days, the temp. decreased by 3 degrees" ---> so far, x + 6 - 3 on the third day
"on the third day the temperature was -6" ---> set what we have so far equal to -6

x + 6 - 3 = -6, solve for x
