general rule of thumb: "less important" words like conjunctions and articles usually are not not stressed

additionally, for multi-syllabic words, you can try reading the word out loud to see where the stress naturally is (ex: falling ---> the emphasis is on the first syllable, because the word is pronounced more like FALL-ing, not fall-ING. if in doubt, check a dictionary/pronunciation guide
