benerickson:

What is the function of mitochondria? Why do heart cells have a higher percentage of mitochondria than liver and pituitary gland cells?

sammixboo:

The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell!! This pretty much means that the mitochondria provides energy to the entire cell by essentially digesting nutrients. Do you have an idea as to why they might be located more in the heart than the liver and pituitary gland cells?

Allisonthenoob:

as the heart is constantly pumping blood around the body, it needs a rich supply of oxygen and glucose. There are more mitochondria found in heart cells because this means we are able to produce enough energy to keep it functioning efficiently.
