Desde and desde hace both refer to time but in different ways. They also both mean since in English. Desde hace can also mean other things too though but even though it can mean other words too, the Spanish sentence with desde hace in them have to still refer to time.

It sounds much more proper if you simply say "desde". You should only use "desde hace" when you are referring to an extended amount of time. For example "Desde hace tiempo no voy a la tiende." Do you understand?
