midpoint formula: \[(\frac{ x_{1}+x_{2} }{ 2 },\frac{ y_{1}+y_{2} }{ 2 })\]put more simply, add the two x-coordinates (in your case, a and j) and divide by 2 to get the new x-coordinate of the midpoint. repeat with the y-coordinates.
