Alana was in the schoolyard before the school day began. She was standing next
to her friend Eliza as she observed the long line of cars inching up to the front
door to let students out. Too many kids were driven to school. The exhaust from
the cars was polluting the air. She told her friend it would be better for the
environment if students walked to school like she did.
2. Carlos was listening and moved closer to the girls. He was shy and hesitated to
interrupt. He knew that it was good exercise to walk. Besides, they were cooped
up in school all day long. Every day as he walked to school, he noticed the
seasons changing little by little. Maybe he would suggest that he and Alana and
Eliza start a campaign to help people stay fit by walking to school. But he could
not muster the courage to speak.
