Why do you think religious scenes were such a common subject matter for artists to use in etchings and intaglio prints? Why does this medium lend itself to the subject matter?

Let's think of the time that these pieces of art were created. Religion was ingrained in the culture itself. It was easy to look to religion for inspiration as it was pervasive in almost every aspect of life.
