For a basic understanding, take for example the equation AI + O -> 2AI + 2O. As you can see, on the left side there is 1 AI and 1 O and on the right side there are 2 AI and 2 O. This equation isn't balanced. There is 1 more AI and 1 more O on the right side than on the left side. So to balance this, we would just make the equation 2AI+2O -> 2AI + 2O and as you can see there are both 2 AI and 2 O on both sides of the equation. Keep in mind that you can only add numbers in front of the element.
