China is not as developed as Japan because of its large population. China's economy is unable to provide for all of its citizens, which number more than one billion. Many of the people, primarily in rural areas, live in poverty and work in agriculture. 76% of Japanese citizens work in the service industry, and the country has a much lower population. China has the second-largest economy in the world, but its economic gains are limited due to its high population. Japan has a smaller economy than China, but its much smaller population accounts for it being one of the highest developed countries in the world.
