Allison:

Polynomial long division.

mxddi3:

do you have a specific problem?

Allison:

(2x^3-8x^2+9x-2) divided by (x-2)

Allison:

Write remainders as fractions.

mxddi3:

ok lemme solve this out real quick, gimmie like 1 minute

Allison:

Okay

\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @Allison (2x^3-8x^2+9x-2) divided by (x-2) \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) How do ya'll work this out?

Timmyspu:

All you have to do is solve the stuff in parenthesis and divide by 2

R3al:

Oh, Thanks.

mxddi3:

ok so first step is to make sure it's in Ax^2+Bx+c form. In this case it is seeing as we start with an exponent of 3 then we go to an exponent of 2 then 1 then a constant. so then we need to set up our problem. |dw:1608087509373:dw| follow so far?

Allison:

Okay

mxddi3:

ok so now we solve. we are going to take the FIRST term from the denominator and see what we need to multiply it by to get the first term of the numerator. We will place this number above the corresponding term and then multiply it by both terms in the denominator. This sounds confusing, ik, sorry. Here's a visual. Let me know if it doesn't make sense |dw:1608087740087:dw|

mxddi3:

so we did x times what is equal to 2x^3? it would be 2x^2, so we write it above the terms that has x^2 in it. do you follow?

Allison:

Yes

mxddi3:

ok so then we do the same steps as if we were doing regular long division. Now we are going to repeat. Now x times what is going to be equal to -4x^2? do you need me to give you the visual or do you want to try it? |dw:1608087955170:dw|

Allison:

Just keep doing it so I can take notes lol

mxddi3:

lmaooo ok. so continuing, we need to know what times x is going to be -4x^2.we get -4x,so we write it above the term containing an "x" and we multiply. we get x-2. Now, what times x is 1x? the answer is going to be 1. so we write this about our constant, and multiply. Then we will end up with our answer, and in this case,we have no remainder so our answer is just 2x^2-4x+1 |dw:1608088597589:dw|

mxddi3:

i can give you an example of one with a remainder if you need it as well.

Allison:

Thank you lots <3

mxddi3:

you're welcome <3
