What can you do if you want to change the direction of an object? Apply a force from a different direction. Increase its speed. Increase the friction on the surface. Wait until it changes direction on its own.

Well, if you want to change the direction, you wouldn't want to keep on pushing it in the same direction it is already going in! Speeding it up, slowing it down, or waiting around isn't going to do anything in regards to the direction the object is going in. Which of these directly changes where the object is going?
