The magazine you work for, World Historical, has a new project. Its next issue will focus on the world’s ancient river civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Indus Valley. The editor of the magazine, Rufus Pennypacker, Jr., has big plans in store. He wants to use the issue to boost subscribers. The subjects must be covered completely and correctly. Congratulations, you have been hired to do the job!

Assignment: Create a magazine article about one of the Ancient River civilizations. Before you begin your assignment, take a few minutes to review Level 1 of the Expository Writing Activity.

Topic: Choose one of the following topics for your magazine article:

The Ancient River Civilization of Mesopotamia
The Ancient River Civilization of Egypt
The Ancient River Civilization of the Indus Valley

Text: The newspaper article must include the use of S.P.R.I.T.E. This means that your article must describe the social, political, religious, intellectual, technological, and economic aspects of the Ancient River Civilization you chose to write about. You must cover all six features of S.P.R.I.T.E. in your article to get full credit.

Graphics: In your article, you must include an image for each of the six features of S.P.R.I.T.E. For example, if you are talking about a political feature in your article, you may want to include a picture of a king.

Length: The length of your article should be at least one paragraph for each feature of S.P.R.I.T.E. This means that since there are six features of S.P.R.I.T.E., your magazine article should be at least six paragraphs long.
Marketing: Don’t forget that the editor is trying to boost subscribers for the magazine. This means you must produce a professional-looking article - one that is print-ready, graphically pleasing, and that will sell off the shelves.
