Most definitely harder for a subtle look. Using a softer charcoal will smear a lot more if you're going for a dynamic look. Charcoal is easy smearable as is, so for advice, use an extra piece of paper under your hand while drawing so it doesn't smear areas you're not trying to. Here's in image provided
