The largest industry in the colonies was New England shipbuilding.

No, direct answers, please. Anyways, timber was harder to find in England, and they realized it would be a lot cheaper to have the colonists make them and then buy the ships from them. around 30 something percent of the fleet for Britain had been built in America I believe.
