George Mason was one of the most vocal critics of the Constitution and his protests are considered a major factor in the drafting of the Bill of Rights. Why was he so concerned about the absence of a bill of rights in the Constitution?

He and other anti-federalists were concerned of the federal government getting too large and too powerful, which would mirror the tyranny brought by the English crown (ie the British king). This fear was completely justified considering how the colonies broke off from England for this very reason.

The bill of rights are the first 10 amendments to the constitution that guarantee the freedom of speech, assembly, right to protest peacefully, etc. The list is very lengthy so I recommend you research about them. This way there's a check on the governments power so it doesn't get too powerful.
