An oil drum of mass 250kg rests on the ground. A Vertical cable is attached to the drum and the tension is gradually increased. At one stage the tension in the cable has the magnitude 1800N. a)What is the magnitude of the normal contact force between the drum and the ground at this instant? b)What happens when the tension reaches 2500N?

On my phone so apologies for typos/formatting a) draw the free body diagram. You’ll notice the contact force and tension forces are opposite to the force of gravity. Therefore, net force = Tension force + contact force - gravitational force The crate isn’t moving at this instant so net force = 0 Gravity = mg for a flat surface like this Tension is given as 1800N Solve for the normal force
b) think about what happens when the tension force reaches 2500N. You can plug this into the formula from before and you’ll notice something interesting about the net force and what that means for the system
