When Writing a Research Paper (Please refrain from commenting until I've finished my post) Thank you

XioGonz:

• Maintain a varied syntax and diction throughout your research paper and always remember to have a serious tone that avoids 1st person. • Make sure you have evidence, a variety of sources with facts, and quotes integrated within your paper. • You must have an introduction, several body paragraphs, and of course a conclusion. • At the end of your introduction, you should have a well-crafted thesis statement. • It is generally advised that you keep your paper in 3rd person point of view so it is best to refrain from using words such as 'I', 'you', 'we', 'me', 'my', 'us', 'our', 'your', etc. • When speaking about any subject it is best to be specific and explain your reasoning. • Don't use vague words such as 'it', 'he', 'stuff', 'thing', 'they', 'she', etc. • Try to occupy words that are vivid and concrete to the best of your ability. • When you find yourself using a vague word like 'it', 'thing', 'this', 'good', 'there is/are', 'that', or words that are overly repeated, take a moment to think of a more exact word (a synonym) that applies to the certain situation of which you are writing. • Instead of using the word 'so', try out words such as 'Hence', 'Thus', 'Since', 'However' etc. -These are more formal transitions- • Never begin a sentence with a numeral - Instead of "4 score and 7 years ago" say "Fourscore and seven years ago". ALSO "Ultrilliam has more than 1000 fans" instead of '1000+ people have fanned Ultrilliam" • Use different types of sentences in order to give your paper "variety'. • Try combining two short sentences into one (without turning it into a run-on sentence of course) Also, search for sentences that use more words than necessary to convey their ideas. • WATCH OUT FOR SPELLING AND GRAMMATICAL ERRORS! -There are word-processing programs that can help you with this- • To provide more information to the reader and add variety for a more interesting and engaging paper give them action. • To emphasize "something exists" you can also say 'there are', 'there is', 'there was', 'that is', 'this is' 'there could be'. -All these statements are redundant- • Check your verbs. Make sure all of your verbs are in the same tense. i.e. a.) Riding, Walking, Playing, Laughing, Punching b.) Walked, Ran, Died, Slept, Punched c.) Was Slapping, Was Kicking, ......Was Dying.. -This applies to paragraphs as well, but make sure you don't shift the tense. (Literature is traditionally discussed in present-tense) • Finally - Make sure to have a works-cited page. Keep in mind that the In-text citations and the entries on the works-cited page match. That is all, Thank you for your time!!
