Could a serial killer continue undiscovered by friends, family, and work colleagues? Why or why not?

If you have ever heard of Ted Bundy you'll know right away that he was the nicest most generous man, but he had a dark side that nobody else knew because of his good looks and charming personality. Among his colleagues and his friends, they didn't know how messed up he really was. He was married to some girl, but then I think she heard the rumors about him and left him. He was sent to jail for a while but wrote poems to his ex=wife. So, My theory would be Yes, a serial killer can be undiscovered for awhile. But nothing can be kept secret for long...
