What are some things to be aware of that can lead to higher than expected total when making a purchase or checking out?

Taxes are the only thing that come to mind. Specifically, sales tax is added on to some items.

For example, if an item is $10 and tax is 7%, then you'll add on 0.07*10 = 0.70 dollars or 70 cents to the total. The actual total would be 10+0.70 = 10.70

Good point, though you have the option to pay extra for warrantee. While taxes aren't an option and always mandatory.
