To answer your question, you have to create and solve a system of equations.

We can use any letter for our variables but so as to not get confused, let's say that
V = number of students that one van can hold
B = number of students that one bus can hold

We have to come up with the equations. I'll do the first one for you as an example.

There were 6 vans and if each van can hold V students then we get 6V
There was 1 bus and if each bus can hold B students then we get 1B
The total number of students on 6 vans and 1 bus was 146 students.

This means that our first equation is
6V + 1B = 146
