Oregon Trail May 1,1843 The time is mid-day me and my lover struck with everlasting love have decided to leave for Oregon. We must leave for Oregon because our love is forbidden amongst our parents. We leave from Independence Missouri unbeknownst to our parents if my mother and father were to ever find us again, I hope they will finally accept our love. We leave with 636 pounds of food, two yokes of oxen and our few possessions. We set off saying goodbye to our fellow town's folk wishing to see them again in another life. We join a wagon train, and we start heading east. May 4, 1843 The sun is just starting to rise from the east the weather is tolerable we have traveled 200 miles and as I look around and see the other travelers in front and behind us sitting there wondering what reason they all left their towns to travel did they leave to escape a bad spouse? did they leave to travel to better farmland? Or did they leave their towns in hopes of finding gold and other materials that would make them wealthier? as I am sitting on the driver seat holding the reins to the oxen our wagon suddenly hits a bump in the road and when I go to look, I realize it is the arm of a dead traveler. Sadly, death and disease are just a normal part of the Oregon trail, but I could not imagine having to watch my lover pass so horridly and then having to bury them in the road. We are making appropriate time and speed at this rate we should be there in no time. May 7, 1843 The sun is starting to set the weather is starting to cool we have traveled 400 in all and me and my lover are setting up camp for the night. I grab some firewood and our pots so we can start cooking. As my lover starts making us food. I look up to the stars and wonder if well be able to make this journey or if it is worth it. I look over and see my lover calling me over to get food I walk over, and I sit down next to them happy to be with them. Thinking of how lucky I am to be able to be with them whether it is allowed amongst our townsfolk. My lover and I settle down next to our wagon and fall asleep. May 12, 1843 It is the afternoon, and the weather is hot we have traveled 700 miles in all. While we were driving our wagon hits a rock causing the wagons wheel to break off as I try to fix it a fellow traveler stops his wagon and asks if I need help knowing I will take hours to fix it I say yes. Thankfully, it only took him an hour to fix it. May 16, 1843 It is mid-day, and the weather is tolerable we have traveled 1000. We have reached the Missouri river Not wanting to take a chance for our wagon to sink or fall over I look for a ferry thankfully it only cost us $5.00 we used what little money we had left to buy a ferry across the river. By the time we got across it was night fall. June 25, 1843 It is the morning the weather is cold, and we have had to change our rations were running out of food we have traveled 1500 miles in all. My lover got deathly sick with mumps a few days ago it was so terrible having to watch them suffer through that. Thankfully, they survived they just barely survived. I could not imagine what I would do without them. I decided to go hunting and managed to kill a bison and get 200 pounds of food. July 12, 1843 It is the afternoon the weather is cool our rations are low we have traveled 2000 miles. My nightmare has come true. like the other travelers my lover has gotten sick with smallpox it first started with them getting a high fever and then they started to get a horrible red rash all over their body and then finally they passed in my arms holding so tightly that their knuckles turned white overcome with grief I held tightly to them not wanting to let them go sobbing and screaming form grief. They were my everything my entire world and now they are gone without them I cannot go on. I do not know how long I was sitting there clutching their body, but my fellow travelers came and helped me bury them Because of animals we had to bury them in the road where all the wagons traveled, I could not bear to leave them, but I had to. As you would imagine I could not sleep I tossed and turned but somehow managed to fall asleep. I dreamt of them running through a Medow in the most beautiful outfit beckoning me to follow when I tried to follow them my legs were stuck, I look down and my legs were stuck in the mud from the trail I look around panicked and I see my lover running back to me, but they suddenly start melting into a grotesque creature made of mud I suddenly wake up drenched in sweat and at a loss for breath and words. I stay awake for the rest of the night not wanting to have that dream again. July 20, 1843 It is the afternoon, and the weather is hot I have traveled 2000 miles. After what has happened to my lover, I have not gotten the motivation to continue August 2, 1843 It is the morning the weather is tolerable I have traveled 2100 miles. After sitting mourning my lover I realized even though they are gone they still would want me to continue and make it to Oregon. I must make this journey not for myself but for my lover. August 12, 1843 It is the morning the weather is blistering I have traveled 2170 miles. I made it to Oregon. I hired a mountain man to help me find my plot of land after I found my land, I unhooked my oxen and tied them next to a plot of grass. I unloaded my wagon, and I found my lovers necklace and realized how much I missed them. April 14, 1846 It is the afternoon the weather is tolerable, and I am home. It has been a few years since I have lost my lover and since then I have built myself a house and a farm, I sit on my lawn content with life as I see the neighbor kids run across the yards chasing each other.
