Describe one of the symbols in “The Cask of Amontillado.” Explain how the author uses this symbol to convey the theme of the story.

Lexxi:

One of the symbols that we can find in this story is Fortunato's name. "Fortunato" means "lucky one" in Italian. We can tell that Poe means this in an ironic way, as it is obvious that the character is not fortunate at all. The symbol conveys the theme of deceit and false appearances. Just as Fortunato is not what his name would indicate, several other situations are not what we might expect. Montresor is not the friend he pretends to be, while the carnival is not the innocent, fun festivity that we might at first believe.
