Help pls

AZ:

Funny. Someone just asked this question.

Maxine:

oop

AZ:

Do you know the distributive property? a(b + c) = ab + ac a(b - c) = ab - ac

Maxine:

yeah

itsmehjay:

i just tagged you to the question alr done ;-;

AZ:

so distribute -5(a+7) what do you get?

simsharrison:

37=−5(a+7)+7(6a+5) distribute 37=(−5a−35)+(42a+35) combine like terms 37=37a+0 a = ? -@darkknight

Maxine:

????

Maxine:

Im so confused

AZ:

Let's do it step by step :)

AZ:

Can you distribute the -5 -5(a+7) = ?

Maxine:

-5a-35? @AZ

AZ:

\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @simsharrison @Maxine look at my response and then look at it, then what is 37=37? \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) They need to know how to do it. Sure they can get the answer, but what use is the answer if they don't understand how to do it?

AZ:

Good!

AZ:

\( 37 = -5(a+7) + 7(6a +5)\) We just distributed the -5 and got \( 37 = -5a-35 + 7(6a +5)\) Now, can you distribute the 7 the same way you did it earlier? 7(6a +5) = ?

Maxine:

42a+35

AZ:

Good!

AZ:

\( 37 = -5a-35 + 7(6a +5)\) Now we get \( 37 = -5a-35 + 42a +35\) Now, let's add the like terms. What's -5a + 42a =

Maxine:

37a

AZ:

Good so now we have \( 37 = -35 + 37a +35\) What is -35 + 35 = ?

Maxine:

it would be 0 right?

AZ:

Yes If you have 35 oranges and you eat 35 oranges, you're left with 0 oranges -35 + 35 or another way to write it would be 35 - 35 = 0

AZ:

So now we have \( 37 =37a\) Can you solve for a? Just divide 37 on both sides

Maxine:

it would then be 1

AZ:

And that's your answer!

Maxine:

\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @AZ And that's your answer! \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) Thx @AZ
