what specific rhetorical devices/literary devices does the author use in "The Modest Proposal"?
Do you have more info to go with this?
yea do you?
Yea, its based on an essay/story I read recently.
Ok I dont know what its about because I have never read it so could you give us a summary so I could help you better?
yea, i havent read it either.
yeah ofc, my apologies. So Ireland is dealing w/ poverty and that the country ameliorate poverty in Ireland by butchering the children of the Irish poor and selling them as food to wealthy English landlords. The author ironically proposes that the people of Ireland sell their children as food. The essay was used to suggest something in order to point out a problem by pushing it to its logical extreme. So basically the author wanted to outline suggestions for helping the poor people of Ireland in ridiculous ways.
ok, so what are you thinking?
Well I was thinking maybe pathos? Because there's a lot of emotion coming out from by the author, due to poverty in Ireland?
I was thinking pathos too. Is it like a multiple choice question?
I was just researching now and is Jonathan Swift a character in this essay?
How many rhetorical devices do you think he uses?
No its a text box where you explain specifically & write out what you think, & no hes the author of the essay, and his option on that people in Ireland eat babies wasn't originally his it was from someone else but he was writing it as an example of exaggeration.
So based off them eating babies, what do you think is the specific rhetorical device?
I do think also ethos because he stats out a specific quote, which seems like he is trying to urge the reader to believe him. He states a worthy, virtuous person gave him this idea.
Based off my research, it says "The author tries not addressing his subject directly, children, instead Swift introduces the concept of a market, livestock, breeders, etc."
So it could also be logos?
Yeah, maybe. :/
I think it might be pasos.
Okay thank you! :) appreciate the helpp
Wait, I think he uses multiple, I think it is ethos, logos and pathos. What do you think?
well i re read the essay and I found all of them. So i think each ethos, pathos, logos are found i believe.
OK so we agree on ethos, logos and pathos?
Yepp, thank you
Np. Glad to help. :)
