The graph shows the relationship between the number of months different students practiced tennis and the number of matches they won: The title of the graph is Tennis Matches. On x axis, the label is Number of Months of Practice. On y axis, the label is Number of Matches Won. The scale on the y axis is from 0 to 22 at increments of 2, and the scale on the x axis is from 0 to 12 at increments of 2. The points plotted on the graph are the ordered pairs 0, 2 and 1, 5 and 2, 8 and 3, 9 and 4, 10 and 5, 12 and 6, 13 and 7, 16 and 8,17 and 9, 18 and 10,20. A straight line is drawn joining the ordered pairs 0, 3.3 and 2, 6.8 and 4, 10 and 6, 13.5 and 8, 17 and 10, 20.5. Part A: What is the approximate y-intercept of the line of best fit and what does it represent? (5 points) Part B: Write the equation for the line of best fit in the slope-intercept form and use it to predict the number of matches that could be won after 13 months of practice Show your work and include the points used to calculate the slope. (5 points)
is this a test?
no, it's for this homework sheet i got from my teacher.
🤨 ok..
i'm just having trouble
What do you think the y-intercept is?
Idk, i'm having a lot of trouble with it
Hint: Its between 2 and 4 and it's where the line starts.
wait, sorry for asking and mostly likely sounding stupid. whats a y-intercept? i just started this lesson so

oh, ok thank you
\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @hi123654789 oh, ok thank you \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) so, what do u think it is?
it's 0,3?
\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @hi123654789 it's 0,3? \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) Correct!
YAY!
ok, so now what do u think it represents?
Where the line takes place or well starts to take place.
\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @hi123654789 Where the line takes place or well starts to take place. \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) yea.. but based on graph, Hint: With ___ months of practice, the tennis students won ___ matches. Fill in the blanks^^
uhhh, 13, and idk the last one
\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @hi123654789 uhhh, 13, and idk the last one \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) no, we are using the numbers from the y-intercept.. does that make sense?
so 0,3
Yes, with 0 months of practice, the tennis students won 3 matches.
ohhh, wow this is easy now that i kinda understand it
\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @hi123654789 ohhh, wow this is easy now that i kinda understand it \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) lol yea, that's part 1, now lets do part 2
ok
do you know how to find slope?
To find the slope you divide the difference of the y-coordinates of 2 points on a line by the difference of the x-coordinates of those same 2 points.
\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @hi123654789 To find the slope you divide the difference of the y-coordinates of 2 points on a line by the difference of the x-coordinates of those same 2 points. \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) yesssss, so pick two points, you can use 5,12 and 7,16 if u want
ok, well i'm having trouble doing that
I attached a photo to find slope
Does it make sense or no?
yea
\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @hi123654789 yea \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) great, so now we can write our equation y = mx + b m = slope b = y-intersept y = 2x + 3.3
so, after that would we solve or leave it?
\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @hi123654789 so, after that would we solve or leave it? \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) it says 13 months so we have to substitute x with 13 and solve for y y = 2(13) + 3.3
oh ok.
So, can you solve for it or do u need my help?
i believe i'll need help
ok, so y = 2(13) + 3.3 Start by multiplying.. 13 x 2 = ?
it's 26
yes, so now, do 26 + 3.3
k, so that's 29.3
\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @hi123654789 k, so that's 29.3 \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) correct, so that means they can win 29 matches after 13 months of practice.
OHHH
\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @hi123654789 OHHH \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) yeah, understand now?
Thank you so much. That helped a lot and yeah i understand now.
