Normally it's a good idea to start in South America or Australia. Depending on the version you're playing you'll only have to worry about at most two fronts. Australia only has to worry about one. If you're going Australia it's normally a good idea to take Siam when placing troops so you have an entrance to Asia. It's a good idea to take West Africa if you're going to take South America. This gives you a buffer zone so that you don't lose your source of troop income.

Make an AI play the game. And then, you can learn the strategies used by AI.
You could use a basic min-max Algorithm for the AI. There are research papers available online for this.
