For a problem like this, I can give you examples of other things that are typically measured with each type of unit.

For example:
kilometers: I would measure the distance from my school to the local library in kilometers because I have to drive from one place to anther.

meter: I would measure the classroom in meters, because I can take multiple steps from one side of the classroom to the other side

centimeter: I would measure the height of a bottle of water in centimeters

millimeters: I would measure the thickness of a pencil lead in millimeters
