help math

lilcutie2:

AZ:

Hey! So our first number is 80 and we're increasing it by 50%

AZ:

So since we're increasing that means our new number has to be bigger There's two ways to do it- We first multiply 50% or 0.5 to 80 and then whatever we get, we add that to 80

CripQUEZZ:

So 80 x 0.5 = ?

AZ:

Another way to do it since we know that we're increasing the number, we can multiply it by 100% + 50% so if we multiply it by 150%, we save a few steps so 150% is the same as 1.5 what is 80 * 1.5 =

CripQUEZZ:

Wait I thought it was jus 100% altogether

lilcutie2:

120

CripQUEZZ:

Srry I’m asking a lot of questions your smart so I’m tryna learn lol

AZ:

when you increase, that means the number has to be bigger as an example- I have this cookie and I'm selling it for $2 But now I'm increasing the price by 50% if I just do 50% or 0.5 * 2, I'll get 1 Does that mean I'm selling my $2 cookie for $1 now? Absolutely not!! I'm adding that 1 on top of the 2 dollars which makes it $3

AZ:

So another way which saves steps so you don't have to do the multiplication and then add to the number is to account for all of that in the beginning so we're INCREASING by 50% that means 2 dollars was our original amount basically the full 100% price now we're increasing it by 50% so altogether it's 150% and so 150% or 1.5 * 2 gives us 3 which is the final price

lilcutie2:

I got 120

AZ:

\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @lilcutie2 120 \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) Now that's correct! But your question isn't done yet. They now want us to decrease it by 50%

AZ:

50% is the same thing as 50/100 or 0.5 so what is 120 * 0.5 =

lilcutie2:

60%

AZ:

we don't add any percent signs here, it's just going to be 60 :)

lilcutie2:

or just 60

AZ:

there you go!

CripQUEZZ:

Nice

AZ:

Does that make sense? Did my example help :)

lilcutie2:

CripQUEZZ:

The second one you do the exact same steps

AZ:

So for this question similarly- we're DECREASING by 25% that means from our total 100%, we're taking away 25% so we have to multiply the number by 75% or 0.75

AZ:

Does that make sense?

lilcutie2:

yes

AZ:

So what is 128 * 0.75

lilcutie2:

96

CripQUEZZ:

Good

AZ:

Now we're INCREASING it by 25% so what should we multiply it by? we have the whole 100% of the number and we're increasing it by 25% what are we going to multiply it by?

lilcutie2:

0.25

AZ:

we can do that too but if we multiply by 0.25, remember to add it back to the original 96 because we're INCREASING by 25% so what is 96 * 0.25 =

lilcutie2:

24

CripQUEZZ:

Correct

AZ:

now add that to 96 so 96 + 24 =

lilcutie2:

120

CripQUEZZ:

See you got this

AZ:

And that's your answer!

lilcutie2:

\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @CripQUEZZ See you got this \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) thxs

lilcutie2:

\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @AZ And that's your answer! \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) thxs for the help

AZ:

You're absolutely welcome!

CripQUEZZ:

\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @lilcutie2 \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @CripQUEZZ See you got this \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) thxs \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) Np

lilcutie2:

so can I show you how I do this next one to see if I got it right

AZ:

For sure!! Let's see you take a stab at it

lilcutie2:

I'm gonna do this one

lilcutie2:

150 times .40 equals 60 and then 60 times .60 is 36

snowflake0531:

eeee and then add the principle value

AZ:

sorry no remember what we said about increasing and decreasing?

lilcutie2:

60 plus 36 =96

lilcutie2:

so 96

AZ:

actually no mhmm

lilcutie2:

sorry I'm trying

AZ:

So we have to do each part on it's own we're INCREASING by 40%

AZ:

you found (correctly) that 150 * 0.4 is 60 now since we're INCREASING you have to add that 60 to 150 so what is 150 + 60

lilcutie2:

150 plus 60= 210

AZ:

good! So that's the answer to the first half of your question Now for the second half we're taking 210 and INCREASING it by 60% so how do we do that?

lilcutie2:

times 210 by .60

AZ:

okay good and then we have to add that to 210 because we're INCREASING by 60%

lilcutie2:

336

AZ:

And there you go! That's your answer to the second part

CripQUEZZ:

Good job

lilcutie2:

so do we do the same for decrease

AZ:

for decrease, we would just subtract whatever you get from the original number

lilcutie2:

ok thanks

AZ:

You're welcome!

lilcutie2:

@AZ

lilcutie2:

got a question I did this one but I want to make sure it's right

snowflake0531:

i can help

lilcutie2:

I did it I just want to make sure I did it right

snowflake0531:

what'd you get

lilcutie2:

so I did 480*.35= 168 and then 480-168=312 and then 312*.65=202.8 and then 480-202=278

snowflake0531:

ummm, since 0.35 and 0.65 add up together to be 1, you could just do 480 * 0.35, and 480 * 0.65 so, the first parg ig is right, but the 'and then 312*0.65', that's not needed, for the other part, just do 480 * 0.65

AZ:

no, she's rightabout 312 * 0.65 but remember, you have to subtract that from 312 not 480 so what is 312 - 202.8 =

snowflake0531:

\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @AZ no, she's write about 312 * 0.65 but remember, you have to subtract that from 312 not 480 so what is 312 - 202.8 = \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) she is right about the first part but not the second

snowflake0531:

and wait, how'd you edit your answer... i can't do that?

AZ:

err you quoted my first reply where I accidentally wrote write instead of right

snowflake0531:

lol, ik

AZ:

I copy pasted and quickly re-posted

snowflake0531:

oh

lilcutie2:

109.2

snowflake0531:

well, you're still missing a space lol

lilcutie2:

where

AZ:

\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @lilcutie2 109.2 \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) And well done!

lilcutie2:

\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @AZ \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @lilcutie2 109.2 \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) And well done! \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) thanks

lilcutie2:

@az

lilcutie2:

so I did 350*.76 an then did 350+266 and got 616 is that right

snowflake0531:

ye

lilcutie2:

and then do 616*.45 =277.2 and then 616-277.2=338.8

AZ:

Also I would suggest making a new post :) It takes a while to keep scrolling to the bottom haha

snowflake0531:

lol

lilcutie2:

\(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @AZ Also I would suggest making a new post :) It takes a while to keep scrolling to the bottom haha \(\color{#0cbb34}{\text{End of Quote}}\) ok but am I right
