remi2019:

A rectangular lot is 80 yards wide and 115 yards long. Give the length and width of another rectangular lot that has the same perimeter but a smaller area.

remi2019:

p=195 i think

AZ:

so perimeter for a rectangle = width + width + length + length

remi2019:

oh so 390

AZ:

There you go! Now you need to come up with a width and a length that will give you a perimeter of 390

snowflake0531:

and note that the larger the difference between the width and length, the smaller the area

remi2019:

65 and 6?

snowflake0531:

doesn't add up to 390-

AZ:

65 and 6 doesn't work out 65 + 65 + 6 + 6 = 142 not 390

remi2019:

oh

AZ:

also remember what @snowflake0531 said we want it to also have a smaller area so first choose one side of your rectangle like if we make one side as 5, what would the other side be?

remi2019:

the oppisite side would be 5

snowflake0531:

the other length... (390 - 2(5))/2

remi2019:

190

AZ:

and if your triangle has sides 190 and 5 what is the area? just multiply because area = length times width

AZ:

we just have to make sure the area of this new rectangle is smaller than the area of the first rectangle that was 80 yards wide and 115 yards long

remi2019:

950

AZ:

and what is the area of the original rectangle 80 * 115 =

remi2019:

9200 is 80 times 115

AZ:

and so the area is smaller!

AZ:

so that means you can have 190 and 5 as your answer

remi2019:

ok thx
