lilmami:

what grade r u in

lilmami:

oh i cant help sry im in 9th grade

Snub:

lol thanks for looking

lilmami:

np

AZ:

So what do you know about the slopes of two perpendicular lines?

Snub:

im going to be honest, this entire question confuses me

AZ:

it's a whole lot of letters and numbers but let's ignore all that do you know that parallel lines have the same slope?

Snub:

yep i understand

AZ:

so that symbol in your question \(\perp\) that stands for perpendicular it's saying is the line from point A to B going to be perpendicular to the line from point C to D

AZ:

does that make sense?

Snub:

that makes sense

AZ:

Good! Before I give you the main key takeaway that will tell us the answer and eliminate all other answer choices I just want to make sure- do you know how to calculate the slope between two points?

Snub:

if my memory works i should be able to

AZ:

okay, no worries- here is the formula by the way I'll throw in colors for you \(\Large\text{Slope} = \dfrac{\color{green}{y_2} - \color{orange}{y_1}}{\color{blue}{x_2}-\color{red}{x_1}}\) where you have two points \(\Large (\color{red}{x_1}, \color{orange}{y_1})\) and \(\Large (\color{blue}{x_2}, \color{green}{y_2})\)

AZ:

So now, remember that parallel lines have the same slope? Perpendicular lines on the other hand the slopes of perpendicular lines are opposite reciprocals that means if one of them had a slope of 3/4 the other would be OPPOSITE so -3/4 and then RECIPROCAL so -4/3 what that means is when you multiply the slope of two perpendicular lines, you would get -1 just take a look at the example I gave you: what is 3/4 * -4/3 =

AZ:

@snub

Snub:

i think i actully got it right, i turned in the assignment and got an 90%

AZ:

That's good to hear!! What answer choice did you choose?

AZ:

I can check your answer for you :)

Snub:

@AZ I picked A

AZ:

A was wrong. It was actually C which was what I was trying to tell you. When you multiply the slopes of two perpendicular lines, you'll get -1 since the slopes of two perpendicular lines are opposite reciprocals so if the slope of one is a/b then the slope of a line perpendicular to it is -b/a and a/b * (-b/a) = -1

Snub:

oh that makes more sense, I really appreciate the Help even if i chose wrong

AZ:

Hopefully you learned something and you won't get the next question wrong :)
