Why were the New Orleans and the Mississippi River important to the settlers in the West?

I mean New Orleans and the Mississippi River were trading routes and still to this day are. So basically the settlers in the west needed New Orleans and the Mississippi River for transportation of their products-(Goods) so they could be sold.(Basically needed them to complete their trading work)
