let's let d = # of dimes and q = # of quarters since there are 42 coins ---> d + q = 42 the monetary value of (d) dimes is 0.10d, similarly for quarters it's 0.25q since the total value is $3.00 ---> 0.10d + 0.25q = 3 making this your system: d + q = 42 0.10d + 0.25q = 3 solve via substitution or elimination
