In Maya society, boys had a white bead braided into their hair and girls had a string tied to their waist with a red shell attached. At age fourteen an initiation ceremony was performed that marked their passage to adulthood. The beads would be cut from the boys hair and the shell from the girls’ waist and a celebration would follow. ​

For girls and boys coming of age ceremonies celebrate their rite of passage into adulthood and are frequently held during early teen years as secular Bah mitzvah or Bar mitzvah, sweet sixteen, graduation or a marking of a major achievement in the young adults life.
