Anton bought a picnic cooler. His total bill, with tax, was $7.95. He paid 6 percent sales tax. How much did he pay for the cooler alone without the tax?
So he bought a cooler for 'x' dollars and paid 6% tax on it which made his total bill $7.95 so if we're paying 6% tax on something, we're taking 6% of that price and adding it to the original price That's the same thing as multiplying the original price by 1 + 0.06 or 1.06 Does that all make sense? so we have 1.06 * x = 7.95 what is x = ?
Do you understand? @quininna
no
Anton bought a cooler. We're trying to figure out how much paid for the cooler. Let's call the price as 'x' When Anton goes to buy the cooler, he has to pay a 6% sales tax. That means if the cooler cost 'x' dollars, then Anton paid 6% * x dollars in tax The total bill with tax was $7.95
$7.47
So the total bill = Price of picnic cooler + tax and they told us that the total bill is 7.95 We said that the price of the cooler is x And the tax is 6% * x or 0.06x so we have 7.95 = x + 0.06x and now we have to solve for x

Do you know how to solve for x? 7.95 = 1.06x all you have to do is divide 1.06 on both sides and you'll have 'x' which is the price of the cooler without sales tax
