LadyRavyRay:

Charlotte recorded the number of minutes she spent exercising in the past ten days: 10, 12, 5, 2, 7, 1, 14, 3, 5, 6. Find the median of the data. The median is ____ minutes.

AZ:

First, you have to list all the numbers in order Can you do them from least to greatest? 1, 2, .. and so on

AZ:

the median is going to be the middle number and since there's 10 numbers, there isn't going to be 1 number in the middle. There'll be two left over so you have to take the average of it

AZ:

but first, let's just list out all the numbers in order from smallest to biggest

LadyRavyRay:

1,2,3,5,5,6,7,10,12,14

AZ:

so what are the middle two numbers? since it's 10 numbers, we're going to have two numbers in the middle if it was 9 numbers, then we would have had only one number and that would be the median so what are the two numbers in the middle?

LadyRavyRay:

5,6

AZ:

Good! So now we have to take the average of that so we add up the numbers and since it's two numbers, we divide by 2 (5+6) / 2 =

LadyRavyRay:

5.5

AZ:

And that's the median!
