Which argument for independence did Thomas Paine support? The colonies should follow the example of other colonies that had become independent. The colonies needed Britain's protection but should have representatives in Parliament. Monarchy was a good form of government, but George III was a bad king. Great Britain's tax and trade laws hurt the colonial economy.
