Tattyspur:

When you catch a baseball, what kind of work do you do, negative or positive? By catching the baseball, what do you change? Does the baseball gain or lose energy? What kind of energy?

blakev1503:

i know 2

Tattyspur:

ok

blakev1503:

1st would you think negative or positive

Tattyspur:

i think its neg.

blakev1503:

k 2nd do yu hink gain or lose

Tattyspur:

lose

blakev1503:

right

blakev1503:

for the third i dont know

blakev1503:

@cupcakesonice

Tattyspur:

blakev1503:

can you do me a favor @Tattyspur

Tattyspur:

sure

blakev1503:

can you see if you can help me with a question i posted a few minutes ago

blakev1503:

its right above yours

AZ:

So you are right- you would be doing negative work and you will lose energy. But what kind of energy would you be losing? Remember- we have potential and kinetic energy When you catch the ball, would you be converting the kinetic energy to potential energy or potential energy to kinetic energy?

Tattyspur:

you would lose the kinetic energy from the baseball and the kinetic energy would turn into potential from it stopping in your hand

AZ:

Exactly! So you're losing kinetic energy wouldn't you say that's also something you're changing by catching the ball?

Tattyspur:

the amount of kinetic to potential energy?

AZ:

yup

AZ:

also remember work = Force * distance and the person throwing the baseball would be doing positive work you're doing negative work by catching the baseball because you're exerting a force in the opposite direction so that's another thing you're changing

Tattyspur:

right.

AZ:

hopefully that helped :)

Tattyspur:

thnks soooo much :)

AZ:

of course! Glad I could help :)
