LadyRavyRay:

Find the volume of the rectangular prism. Express your answer as a simplified mixed number. 8 3/8m x 2m x 8 1/4m

LadyRavyRay:

@AZ

AZ:

do you know how to make a mixed number into an improper fraction? for example 2 1/4 would become (2*4) + 1 all over 4 so 8+1 = 9 2 1/4 = 9/4

AZ:

can you do that for 8 3/8 ?

LadyRavyRay:

Yes, 8 3/8 = 27/8?

LadyRavyRay:

No...67/8

AZ:

You got it now! Now what about 8 1/4

LadyRavyRay:

33/4

AZ:

Wonderful!

AZ:

Now we can multiply the fractions so when multiplying fractions, you just multiply the numerators across and the denominators across so basically \(\sf{\dfrac{a}{b}\times \dfrac{c}{d} = \dfrac{a\times c}{b \times d}}\)

AZ:

remember: 2 is the same thing as 2/1

AZ:

so what is \(\dfrac{67}{8} \times \dfrac{2}{1} = \) we can multiply by 33/4 afterwards if you notice, we can actually simplify it because we have 2 in the numerator and 8 in the denominator so basically we get rid of the 2 and we're left with 4 in the denominator but if you don't understand how to do that, no worries, just multiply like normal

LadyRavyRay:

Oh the answer 134/8

AZ:

good now \( \dfrac{134}{8} \times \dfrac{33}{4} = ?\)

LadyRavyRay:

4,422/32

AZ:

now let's try to simplify it what do you get if you divide both the numerator and denominator by 2 4422 / 2 = and 32 / 2 =

LadyRavyRay:

4422/32 = 138 3/16

AZ:

Good job!
