well i skimmed through the introduction and it seemed like she kept herself motivated but having a diary to become a journalist, as the author read it as an adult,she must've been surprised by her young self.

I do think we could use the word surprised but why do you say this? Also, the whole text isn't here, so it seems a bit hard to say for sure.
