Prince S. had life changing impacts when he went on these four pilgrimages. These pilgrimages lead him to see 4 things, or the "four sights" as it's known in Buddhism. These four things he saw led to his enlightenment. They opened his eyes to reality and gave him a new perspective to everything. He understood the cycle of life, the underlying fact of death, and disaffection of this universe. It basically opened his eyes to the truth of this world.
This understanding led to the creation of Buddhism.
