it depends on the genre of music u want to persue in, but a good hook wheather its instrumenal or voacl always catches ppl attention, and as far as lyrics, they play a very important role, its all about telling a story and that can draw ppl in too beacuse it might touch them or something and they'll want to keep listening.

I personally listen more to the rhythm, and lyrics of a song-they really got to be in sync with each-other. I think this would go for rap and soul music.
