Jonas was confused on why he was selected to be the Receiver of Memory,and what it was.As stated in Chapter 8, “Jonas has been selected to our next Receiver of Memory.” Then he heard the gasp-the sudden intake of breath,drawn sharply in astonishment, by each of the seated citizens.He saw their faces;widen in awn.And he still did not understand.”.Jonas community is surprised that Jonas was selected to be given the role of the Receiver of Memory,its very rare to ever be given a job like that.Jonas is confused because he never heard of the Receiver of Memory and his communities reaction is odd.
