well first ask your self what a compound sentence. so a compound sentence is a sentence that has two or more subjects and a subject is a person, place, thing or idea.  and so the first sentence says "She took off the backpack and opened it" and in that one i only see on sebject and in the other sentence i see 2 subjects, so know which do you think it is?
