So lincoln had the emancipation proclamation ready to go (the doc that declared all man free) but bc of his side losing many battles recently he was afraid to release it bc no one would listen to hit, he needed to win a battle, and this gave him the chance to do that. https://www.history.com/topics/american-civil-war/battle-of-antietam this should help a fair bit
