What happens if you heat up something? You're adding energy to it, right?

yes thermal energy

AZ:

okay and then when the compound loses some of that energy, then that energy is emitted as light

and depending on the compounds- different compounds absorb different amounts of energy and they can release different amounts of energy so different elements will give off different colors
